Montecristo is a name of two brands of cigars produced in two different places – Cuba and the Dominican Republic. This is quite a common situation with tobacco brands that existed in Cuba before the revolution. The respective companies producing this brand are Habanos SA and Altadis SA (Franco-Spanish tobacco monopoly). The brand was originally created in 1935 and the name for the brand was inspired by the famous novel by Dumas «The Count of Monte Cristo». According to the legend, such a name was chosen because cigarette rollers in the factory Menéndez, García y Cía were being read this very novel while they were working. In the mid-1970-s the operation of the company was moved to the Dominican Republic following the nationalization of the cigar industry in Cuba, and since then Altadis SA is a company that controls the distribution and marketing of these cigars in the US. Cuba’s rights to this tobacco brand are not recognized by the US due to the embargo. Today this brand accounts for about a half of Habanos SA worldwide sales of cigars, which also makes Montecristo cigars the most popular Cuban cigars. The brand has its logo represented by two crossed swords – one yellow and one red.
